Über sechseinhalb Millionen E-Books stehen zum kostenlosen Download auf der weltgrößten E-Book Messe „World eBook Fair“ im Internet zur Verfügung. Bei der World eBook Fair kooperieren verschiedene Projektpartner und Bibliotheken. Das Projekt Gutenberg bietet z.B. 115.000 E-Books, die World Public Library 2,1 Millionen, The Internet Archive mit 2,8 Millionen Titel ist der größte Partner. Auch E-Book-Shops und E-Book-Bibliotheken sind am Projekt beteiligt. Die Online-Messe findet noch bis zum 4. August 2011 statt. Mit einer jährlichen Mitgliedschaft für 8,95 Dollar können ein Jahr lang die in der Regel lizenzfreien E-Books von der Seite heruntergeladen werden. Die meisten Titel sind in englischer Sprache, auf Platz zwei folgt Chinesisch und Deutsch an dritter Stelle.

Problematisch erscheint mir hier die „World Public Library“ mit ihren ziemlich restriktiven Nutzungsbedingungen von (nicht immer) freien e-Books. Diese unterscheidet sich in diesem Aspekt doch sehr von dem internationalen Projekt Gutenberg und dem Internet Archiv (mit Open Library). Auch bietet sie keine Meta-Daten für die Integration in andere Suchmaschinen oder Aggregatoren an. Insgesamt erscheint die World Public Library also als ein technisch wie lizenzrechtlich abgesicherter Daten-Silo. Es fehlt nur noch der Einsatz von „hartem“ DRM… Schade eigentlich, denn die Idee eines grossen Aggregators für (wirklich) freie e-Books und deren Meta-Daten ist grundsätzlich sehr gut. Aber so besteht immer die Gefahr, sich im Dickicht des Lizenz- und Nutzungsrechts zu verheddern und daher macht man besser einen Bogen darum.
